Narcan Saves Lives

December 26, 2018

Ohio had 4,854 accidental drug overdose deaths last year, 444 of which were in Hamilton County (which includes Cincinnati). In October, the Narcan distribution collaborative has handed out more than 37,000 free Narcan doses to the public. Narcan can reverse opioid overdose and revive a patient within seconds.

Since that time, a new report shows that overdose deaths in Hamilton County dropped by 31 percent and emergency room visits were reduced by 42 percent. Dr. Shawn Ryan, who helped institute the Narcan distribution collaborative, stated that 75 percent of his patients with severe opioid use disorder were once revived with Narcan.
